“In my case Pilgrim’s Progress consisted in my having to climb down a thousand ladders until I could reach out my hand to the little clod of earth that I am.”
I’ve referenced Jung’s archetypes in my paintings for years. The idea of the ladder as a tool for ascension has always fascinated me, or in Jung’s quote climbing down into our basic element.
Recently a friend asked me why all the fences in my work?
A fence is just a ladder on its side.
The fence moves horizontally and is a ladder at rest.
Like most of us, our ascension is not so up and down but back and forth, rolling like fences through the hills.
I am a T.S. Eliot fan and am fascinated by the delineation of year end and year beginning, the past and and it’s relationship to the present and future.
a word, phrase, or number that reads the same backward or forward
I like a good palindrome, backwards is forwards and forwards is backwards. They rock back and forth like an old rocking chair. Palindromes are not always words, sometimes sentences. The character in this painting, “Never Odd or Even”, is waving hello or goodbye? Perhaps both, a visual acting out of that back and forth palindrome.
A poignant coming and going.
My current studio at Pump Project in Austin. This is my favorite painting table. A hollow core door makes a great table. Easy to move. All surfaces are potential palettes.
My home studio in south Austin 2007 – 2011. Love the sunlight, but the Texas heat was more challenging.
I like to shoot close up local action on my smart phone. The colors, steady movements, and an entomological fascination inspire me. Look what these guys can do with some grit and determination. When I was six, I had a different reaction to ants. I had broken my leg and received an ant farm as a present. Insects were pretty icky for me. The ant farm spent time in our storage closet.
Thankfully, I’ve made a turn around. Yes, Texas Wood Cutting Ants can be role models.
Enjoy my Facebook movie.
While many are gearing up for the holidays, I am anticipating November’s East Austin Studio Tour, otherwise known as E.A.S.T. For this reason, November is my new favorite month. I have opened my studio at Pump Project Art Complex for three EAST seasons. With almost 200 open studios, this self-guided art tour is filled with a wonderful energy that infiltrates the whole city.
So why love EAST?
It’s doesn’t cost a dime to get in. It’s FREE! Bring your friends and family.
Austin has a huge artist population, come out and support them. Our final weekend approaches, November 23rd and 24th from 11 am – 6 pm.
MEET INTERESTING ARTISTS
An open studio event is a perfect time to get inside the artist’ space. See us in our native environment: the studio. How do we make what we make? You will find demos of printmaking and other processes. Learn more about encaustics, sniff the bee’s wax. EAST is an opportunity to immerse your senses in what’s behind the studio door….
Many new works are being unveiled at this event and have not been shown to the public. With over 400 artists, EAST can be a wonderful archaeological dig. Make your discovery.
BECOME A COLLECTOR
You can find wonderful art available to fit any collector’s budget. Plus you don’t have to wait until the end of an exhibit to take the work home, cash and carry or credit card. At EAST the open studio invites you into an intimate environment for an experience you will remember into the New Year.
